Reading Helpers - A Story Based Approach

Reading Helpers is a program for children who are reading below their grade level or need help with their reading. Children are encouraged to learn and practice reading with 1:1 support in a structured yet enjoyable environment.

Reading Helpers is based on the understanding that reading is a complex socio linguistic skill and can best be supported by a story based approach to reading. Underlying this program is the approach to build a relationship with texts. Bookworm experience has found over the years that this is the most significant milestone in a child’s reading history.

Learning to love books, being able to enjoy them and learn from them, think about them and manipulate ideas within them with meaning making, fosters the motivation needed to begin and continue reading.

The program will enable children to meet dedicated Bookworm facilitators in person, once/twice a week for 1:1 help with their reading process. Each session will involve reading together, engaging in reading related games, word work, and paper-pencil activities.

In order to facilitate this process and enable access to good books, as part of this program Bookworm will lend each child recommended books for home reading.
