It is always a great pleasure to invite all our all Mobile Outreach Program (MOP) community library children i.e Chimbel, Cacra and Bethesda Life Center into our main Bookworm Library. Children too love to come back every time to the library without any hesitation. It is also at these times where all our three communities come under the same roof, face to face with each other which is a plus point.
This time we were very happy to invite Priya Kuriyan into our library to meet and interact with our children. “Priya Kuriyan is a children’s book writer, illustrator, comics maker, and animator. A graduate of NID, she has directed educational films for the Sesame Street show (India) and the Children’s Film Society of India. She dabbles with various visual styles and fills her sketchbooks with strange caricatures of people from places she travels to” ( www.storyweaver.com) . Every story has an author and illustrator and the children of our community library are very much aware of that. This was a perfect opportunity to introduce such a fine, illustrator of children’s storybooks to our children.
However, before introducing the illustrator directly to the children, we did a preview and review of all her books that we have in the library. We had a special session where the children were first introduced to her books . Some of them as Princess Easy Pleasy, The Poop Book!, Rooster Raga, Ammachi’s Glasses, When Ali Became Bajrangbali, Mallipoo, Where are You?and more. In this process, the children had to read, review and understand use of illustrations and story. One of the stories which our children have enjoyed to the fullest is the Rooster Raga.
After understanding her style of illustration and story, the children were finally ready to meet Priya Kuriyan. As much as children were excited to meet her, we sensed a similar excitement in Priya Kuriyan. She was welcoming, kind and very generous with the children. Priya spoke about her journey with illustrating, she shared her favourite stories and then shared some of the processes she uses when developing a character.
There was a huge request from the children to witness Priya Kuriyan drawing live for them. They wanted to witness the creating of a character. It was a nice moment which we all witnessed where we saw Priya illustrating different characters experiencing emotions and feelings. Wow! Thank you Priya for coming to Bookworm and giving us all an unforgettable evening with you !
