At the end of the academic year, the books that are a part of the Libraries in Schools (LiS) program are brought back from all the schools. Once these books come back to the library, apart from mending and covering, we analyse the collections and separate the books which are in good condition and the books that require mending and covering.
A large number of books require care and therefore to create awareness about book care, we have devised a Book Doctor session to address this issue directly and conduct this at the beginning of the academic year. The objective is to expose children to the culture of being responsible for their books.
To carry this objective further, we decided to announce an Award for the Best Cared For Book for taking care of a maximum number of books after the month long Diwali break. We felt that this would motivate the children and bring about a self realization of taking care of their own library books.
A total of nine classes across different schools received this award which was announced by the Book Doctor. . The children were very happy and excited to receive this award. The joy of happiness could be seen faceses of the children. It was nice to see this reaction from the children. The children promised that they will take care of their library books henceforth. This endeavor is a small step taken by the Bookworm team to create a sense of responsibility and ownership for the library books.
