We started our Summer Camp from the 11th of April with the first themed week ‘Out & About’. The title spoke volumes and after careful planning, we came up with an itinerary. The plan was to have a totally outdoorsy week. We started with the Bhagwan Mahaveer Children’s park. Nine children and four adults were dropped in nature’s lap. Listening to the soulful koel and enjoying the gentle breeze and the cool shade of a variety of trees, the children took a walk around the park and heard a story about a tree which is a girl’s best friend.
Day two was a walk to a farm, which has vegetables, flowers and fruit trees. The children enjoyed exploring the different types of vegetation and fruit trees. They created crowns with leaves and flowers and also planted vegetable seeds in little planters to take home.
Day three was a map trail that started from the Viceroy’s Arch at Old Goa, through the ancient church and ended in the rock garden with a hunt for treasures amidst old headstones and stone carvings.
Day four was a trip to the majestic Reis Magos. The children explored every nook and cranny of the fort and were in awe of the cannons, the watch towers and the view from atop these towers. It was simply breath-taking!!!!
The week ended with a visit to the Fire Station at St.Inez. The duty officers took charge of the children and displayed their prowess and explained in great detail the intricacies of their duties. The children were taken up in the Italian made ALP fire engine and were given a view of the city. They also met many fire officers who very patiently explained the importance of each of their vehicles. This week not only forged a friendship amongst all these children but they also developed a connection with all the stories that had these places as settings and were read aloud in those actual spaces.
