Are you a reader? If yes, who inspires you to read? These two questions pinch me hard every time I come across a book. Personally, I wasn’t a reader back in my primary school and I always considered the library period as a boring period. Neither our library teacher inspired us to read nor did my mind allow me near books. Later when I came to the Bylakuppe school, all of sudden the urge of reading came to life. I started realizing the significance of reading and exploring books at our library. The fear of being left behind academically made me realise what I missed out in my previous school. Though I initiated reading a book every single week, reading for pleasure was a new concept for me. Therefore, I ended up reading those books with fascinating blurbs or distinctive book covers. My selection of books didn’t change much due to my lack of knowledge about good books and well-known writers.
The reason why I mention my personal story is because I want to convey that it is never too late to start your reading journey now. It has been a couple of years since I joined Manjushri Educational Services. Though I am working as an office admin cum accountant at Manjushri, I get to deal with children when our library educator is either on leave or on holiday. Being an introverted girl, I always find it challenging to interact with them. However, my perspective shifted gradually after my enrolment in the library mentorship Program (LMS) offered by Bookworm. I am forever grateful for this opportunity. Every virtual meeting has offered me new learnings regarding library work.
The most exciting part of this LMS Program was attending three days’ workshop in person at Bookworm. It connected me closer to the library work. I learnt a lot about elements of the library; the book displays interaction, collection, administration and many more. I vividly remember enjoying various activities facilitated by the Bookworm team. Personally, facilitating an activity is one of the challenges for me. Witnessing these activities has enabled me to gain more insight about the library work. I was truly fascinated by how those memories are imprinted on my mind.
We have seen that people always assume that the role of library educator is mostly related to administration. Lending books and keeping the records of books are not their only work. They play a vital role in shaping a child’s journey. I have read numerous children’s books with a theme of the library and their journey. While going through these books, I am motivated to bring an impact on at least someone’s life.
After LMS, I have seen many changes in myself. Firstly, I have started engaging more with children and interacting with them. Moreover, I took more part in our library programs. It boosted my confidence to facilitate library activities at our library. Furthermore, I have invested more time in the library to help my colleague Tsering with book displays and activities when needed. It is true that life is never ending if you are a learner. Throughout the year, LMS has enriched my knowledge and understanding about library work. Working in a community with confidence and enthusiasm would not have been possible without the LMS. I am humbled with the motivation that Bookworm has showered throughout the LMS Program.
