As we drove into school this Tuesday I was most excited about what we’d planned for the session and anxious about how the children would respond. There was no ONE book, but a re-collection of the FIVE BOOKS we’d completed in the month and a half we’d spent at Mae dos Pobres High School, Nuvem.
Call me extra sensitive, but somehow I felt that the children’s energy levels were off the scales that day. Their excitement was so much that they happily did the snapping of fingers and clapping of hands (which are reserved for when we want to get their attention) with gusto!
When I asked what the first book was they exclaimed, “Hello Goodbye!”
So also with Rain,
I Like Stars,
Bindi Su,
and Line and Circle. They knew what happened in each book. I was completely thrown.
At every book we sang it’s corresponding song and believe it or not, they hardly needed my help to even remember the words. They sang, came out of their places, just so they had enough space in which to do the actions that went with the song and of course clapped proudly for themselves after they were done.
At the end of our re-collection they did a worksheet based on what they could remember, which they needed help to comprehend and complete. But, their levels of energy I can guarantee hadn’t subsided till we drove out of the school.
The interesting thing I noticed was, that 1st grade and 2nd grade students, recollected the songs we’d sung with them. My happy happy heart! And what of the tune?
It was their own- a magical one. One that they yearn for and it was beautiful to watch them cherish…
