Not just an average SBT Wednesday at Ideal High School….
On the 16th of January, 12 of the students from Ideal High School were given the opportunity to attend a workshop organised by the Sunapranta Centre for Arts, Goa.
This kids were super excited as they piled into the van at 1:30, water bottles in hand and questions just waiting to be asked.
On arrival, they were greeted by Liz Kemp, and were then introduced to the artist for the day, Mr. Vijay Bhandare. It took all of a couple of minutes for the kids to warm up…..and then the session was on!
Vijay took the kids around the gallery that was exhibiting etching prints by contemporary printmakers of India. He explained in detail the process of print making, showing the kids the tools of the trade, and then went on to show them specimens of the various techniques present. And soon enough….the kids were guessing; “etching?!”, “drypoint!”, “monotype?!”
Then came the questions….”How?”, “Why like that?”, “What is this called”, “How do you do that?!” And Vijay patiently responded to all of them.
The one question that was most satisfactorily answered for the children was “Can I do that??”…..they were shown that they absolutely could! There was an audible gasp and “wwwwwow!” as the kids were taken to a workstation set up with paint, brushes, rollers….and a big stack of paper!
For the next hour and a half, Vijay displayed to the kids how various techniques are used to create pieces of art…..and then the little artists set to work….and the production of original masterpieces began!
Colours were mixed, techniques were tried and the kids had a blast through it all!
Enthusiasm was at an all time high as each of them rushed up with their art works….full of happiness and excitement!
At the end of it, the kids had learned a new skill, poured creativity onto paper and expanded their vocabulary.
Stories, art, expression, language, fun…..and learning through it all! The Bookworm way…
